What exactly do web hosts do?

I am looking to set up my own website and am aware that I will more than likely need a web host due to the size of the roject I wish to undertake. I was wondering what they do and how much work they do. For example, will your web host ensure that your site does not get infected with viruses?

Also, how much do web hosts cost?

The more information you can provide the better, as you can see I have a complete lack of knowledge about web hosts!

What exactly do web hosts do?

Web hosts typically just host the website and maintain the server it is on and that is about it. They will make sure the server is up and running properly performance wise and that it is secure.

What exactly do web hosts do?

Here is a good one, and they explain all details:

http://www.ipower.com

Other Replys:Hi!!..ok, web hosts help maintain websites, and if the site is a blog, then, they usually monitor the messages sent back and forth, and start new topics. hope that helped you!

Other Replys:If you have public IP, you can host at your house. Hosting at your home has following issues

i) Power may go down and your UPS will not last more than 1 hour

ii) Internet Link may be issue and your site is not reachable

iii) Your server has issues as hard disk failed

iv) You may not know how to configure firewall and your system

is vulnerable

v) You may not know system admin activities to install some software for hosting

A good hosting provider will take care of the above problems.

Other Replys:This one does:

The kind of answer and information you are looking for can not be adequately covered here so I will only provide you with links that will shed more light to your question.

Start off by familiarizing your self with the basic information about web hosting here http://www.your-inforcom.com/BasicInform...

To learn more on what web hosts do and to that matter how reliable they can be, click here http://www.your-inforcom.com/soyouneedre...

Other Replys:Hi,

I personally use http://www.smiths-internet-services.com.... basically what they do is when you have yourself a website ready to be hosted and a domain name purchased you sign up with them.

They offer a free trial as well if you want to test the services.

They will set up an account for you with username and password protection as well as allocate space and transfers. This all gets stored on one of their computers (Server) which have firewalls and stuff so you do not get infected.

Also they do daily back ups incase the computer crashes and this way you do not lose any information on your website.

Hope this info has helped you.

Web Host and Web Designer?

I%26#039;m looking for a web host to host my art and movie portfolio. I want to be a director, and I%26#039;d like to have an online portfolio versus a giant ripped folder full of DVDs, comics, books and art...

Also, does anyone know any portfolios for good web designers who don%26#039;t price over a hundred?

Any suggestions?

Which web host would you recommend a photographer use?

I am a photographer and would like to set up a web site that would allow me to host galleries from weddings in which the customer would need to sign into.

Which web host would you recommend a photographer use?

I have several. But one of my favorites is a Yahoo web hosting account. They have a simple way of setting up usernames and passwords very quickly for each of your folders. And that%26#039;s a valuable tool for anyone wishing to restrict access to photos or artworks. For example, you could place each wedding in it%26#039;s own individual folder and allow only the participants to view them. Other hosts like Godaddy are troublesome when it comes to passwords.

If password protection is of little value to you then Godaddy is very inexpensive.

Which web host would you recommend a photographer use?

In your shoes, I%26#039;d use more than one. Photobucket offer a good free service - and their paid service actually offers a great deal more space. Added to which you can create individual folders for individual sign ins which might be good for you.

Other Replys:please contact me on info @ area60one. co .uk %26lt;without the spaces%26gt;

we offer an amazing and cheap package for photo gallery websites..

Other Replys:Give http://www.redbubble.com/ a look.

Other Replys:I personally like Netweaver and United Hosting. You get good prices and also good PHP and MySQL support (the things that allow you to use photo galleries). With netweaver, you can now get a lot of storage for very good prices and also good technical support. United Hosting is more expensive but I think better if your doing a lot of stuff with your site and also if your going to be making money from it 鎷? a month isn%26#039;t really that much.

If you wanted something really cheap, you could always try 110MB. They%26#039;re cheap but flawed in some very vital areas.

Finally, if you need a website designing, I%26#039;m a freelance web designer/programmer and am looking to build up my portfolio a bit so will do it for free/very low price depending on how much work it involves. You can visit my portfolio at: http://www.freewebs.com/irelandsoftware/

Hope this helped!

Good web host?

I did a lot of shopping around for a web host and I decided to use godaddy.com and aplus.net

One thing I was sure to ask about is whether I would be charged automatically for exceeding bandwidth, or whether the site would be temporarily shut down for exceeding monthly bandwidth. Both godaddy.com and aplus.net will temporarily shut down the web site, rather than automatically charge you (although both web hosts offer a generous amount of bandwidth, so you shouldn%26#039;t have to worry about this anyway).

Another thing I looked at is how many and what size of databases the plan comes with. aplus.net%26#039;s $9.99 unix plan only gives you 3 mysql databases; the good part is that there isn%26#039;t really a size limit on the databases. godaddy.com lets you have 25 mysql databases with their $6.99 plan (their MySQL database quota is subtracted from the 100GB disk space allocated to your hosting account). Other sites may have a storage limit on their databases.

There are a variety of other factors to consider such as storage space, number of FTP accounts, what server-side processing languages are supported (and what version), what version of PHP and MySQL they support, free software tools for building your website, number of [free] domains hosted, number of subdomains, etc.

I%26#039;ve never used Dreamhost, but it also seems like a good option. It seems to have the same features as the two previously mentioned hosts. The only thing that turns me off is the fact that they charge $1/GB of exceeded bandwidth, and I wouldn%26#039;t want the possibility of unplanned charges (though you probably will not have to worry about exceeding their 1 TB limit). They may have an option to temporarily shut down the web site for the month like the other two hosts I%26#039;ve mentioned.

If I had to choose one, I would go with http://www.godaddy.com --100 GB storage, 1 TB transfer, $6.99/mo (or $5.59/mo if you purchase 2 yrs). If you don%26#039;t need a lot of space, they have 5 GB plans as low as $3.19/mo.

Good web host?

Shop around, and read ALL THE FINE PRINT.

Other Replys:For reasonable pricing and 99% uptime try

www.q-hostonline.com

Other Replys:Finding a good host is tough - there%26#039;s a lot of competition out there. I went with Dreamhost ( http://www.dreamhost.com ) and I%26#039;ve been happy with them. You can host as many domains on one account as you want for no extra charge, 20GB space, 1TB bandwidth, and all domain name registrations include private registration (which I recommend so your personal info is kept out of WHOIS) for less than $10/name. I used a discount code that knocks $50 off any monthly or annual plan when you sign up: DISCO50. So for a 1-year plans that%26#039;s less than $6/month. Good luck!

Other Replys:You can try http://www.dreamhost.com ( http://dreamhost.com/shared/comparison.h... ) hosting solution (if you%26#039;re also looking hosting with a free domain in the packages) , a respectable company and has a good support, uptime with over 700 servers. They give you 20GB Space and 1 Terrabyte of Bandwidth, and a free domain for a good price ($119/year), and with the promo code HOT75 you get $75 off to any yearly and monthly plans you purchase. They have everything you need.

Which means, with that promo code, you get $119 - $75 = $44/year

and $44 / 12 months is only $3.67 a month for that great deal!

Other Replys:Well As a web designer, I am always looking for the best hosting, but want to also cut my expensice. I%26#039;d say this one is one of the ones I use the most.. It only cost about the same as one or two cups of coffee a month. It helps when I need to cut corners but not service.

Go to http://www.pagewaiter.com

That%26#039;s who I have mine through ( http://www.yoico.com ) and they are very cheap (starting at $20/year). Plus, they use CPanel so you can customize it to your liking and also install shopping carts, customer service programs, etc. very easily.
