I am new at web design and I was told that I need to buy a domain name and a web host to make my site %26quot;live%26quot;. I am doing this for a coffee shop. Also, is it really necessary to buy those? Any advice and information pertaining web design is welcome. Thanks
How do I go about purchasing a domain name and a web host?
Hi Jen,
Yes, you do need to buy/purchase a domain name first. Next you need to have your domain %26quot;hosted%26quot; somewhere. This is where you will store all the computer code (like Java Scripting or HTML, etc) and pictures or whatever you like on that server. I%26#039;ve been a webmaster for a few websites for the past several years, and it%26#039;s very rewarding. I collect license plates for a hobby and thus started my own license plate collecting webpage back in 1999. There is a LOT of competition for website domain registration as well as hosting services. In many cases, you can get a %26quot;combined%26quot; package and save money by getting both. One company that I use and is very competitive is godaddy.com. Yahoo has it%26#039;s own hosting service as well.
Hope that helps and good luck to you!
How do I go about purchasing a domain name and a web host?
Google %26quot;top ten hosting companies%26quot; or something like that and there are several websites devoted to comparing features and values for the cost. It is hard to answer because it does matter what purpose you plan to use if for and how much traffic you expect from it.
Other Replys:Yes you would need a domain name which is usually bundled with a web hosting plan. There are many hosting companies out there. Some of those hosting companies will always have software that would help you design your site or will do a design for extra money..
I have tried different hosting companies, but the best by far is lonex.com
I am with them since 1999 and still going. They upgrade their service to benifit the customer regularly with new servers and services.. I would definitely recommend them to the beginner and the pro, their hosting control panel is so easy to use and their services are by far the best out there..
Good luck,
Other Replys:Try www.godaddy.com where you can buy a name and have it hosted with emails.
As to web designs, you could try Microsoft Frontpage which in its basic format, easier to work with than some others I know, if you search google for free webpage designer, you should find some that are free.
Other Replys:Technically speaking, you are not buying the name - you are renting it. If you do not renew it within the renewal period (usually one year) then it is available to all - especially to some trolls who just wait for people to forget to renew and then charge them a significant fee to get their domain name back.
Some hosting plans will automatically renew the domain name as long as you are on the plan. Plans cost from $25/year and up, depending on the amount of traffic you expect, software features, number of domain names attached, type of database running, need for CGI or ASP, type of server (MS/Linux/Other) and countless other options.
You also have the option of running your server in your basement, if you have a broadband connection, don%26#039;t expect too much traffic and your client is not too demanding in terms of security and uptime. You will need a static IP in this case.
You could look for plans at 1and1.com, Yahoo, godaddy.com and others. My suggestion: first go window shopping to see what is available and at what cost, then figure out what you need, and then pick one. As long as you keep good backups, you could always transfer the site to another hosting service if you are not happy (unless you use the service%26#039;s special tools).
Other Replys:For a domain name. Name Cheap.

Hosting. I%26#039;ve been using Host Gator for years.
http://www.hostgator.com
Under $9 monthly.
Web designs? You can get free one%26#039;s at Open Source Web Design.

Other Replys:Yes you will need a domain name. You can get one at http://www.godaddy.com
You will also need a hosting company, the company I use and highly recommend is:
http://secure.hostgator.com/cgi-bin/affi...
A domain name is of course the www address visitors will type in to go to your website. A hosting company is needed to display your website to other people, unless you have a server in your house a host is a must.
When I first started out with web design I used coffee cup and it worked well for what I needed at the time. It%26#039;s a great tool to learn with, you%26#039;ll be a pro in no time:)
Good Luck!

Domains
Following site is quite good to register domains as price is reasonable with free privacy. Some charge about $5/ year just for free privacy.
IPOWER http://www.anurl.com/?TXIBE
Other Replys:To have a website you need to a) register a domain which is an anual fee b) subscribe to a web hosting service which is a monthly fee. Some of the better hosting companies will provide you with software to help you build a website. If you go to http://www.dakotawebhosting.com you can register a domain, subscribe for hosting and use the software package called website tonight to build a website.
As far as cost I know they are having a special where you can register a domain for $1.99 when you buy a non domain product so I think you%26#039;re looking at $1.99 up front and around $5 a month for hosting.
