How do you host a web page on a cable modem with a dynamic ip address?

a step by step guide would be real nice ty

How do you host a web page on a cable modem with a dynamic ip address?

You can use a dynamic DNS service which maps any dynamic address to a fixed internet hostname.

I use

Here is a list of other providers:

You then need to install client software on your host to notify the service when your address changes. There are some free clients, but the service that you choose will have a list of software for your OS.

After you register your host with one of these services, you then need to poke a hole in your cable modem to allow the web traffic in and set up the web server on your host. Make sure that you secure it.

IMO, all things being equal, you are better off going with a low cost or free hosting service like One on One or yahoo/geocities or google like another poster mentioned, because it will not use your bandwidth, and because they know how to secure servers so that your system will not be as vulnerable.

Lastly, your ISP agreement may not permit you to run a server, and doing so may be a violation of that agreement. Likely though, only if you have a lot of traffic, will you run into any issues though.

contact your provider firstly, they have to be the ones to direct stuff to your domain name url.. after you%26#039;ve made sure they%26#039;ll allow it, *some don%26#039;t*, register the domain name you%26#039;re going to use... you%26#039;ll also have to set up a server on your machine for hosting the site.

Other Replys:For a start you need to subscribe to fixed IP address from your ISP, or less reliable (sometimes almost unusable) dynamic dns. You need to register a domain name and set the registrar%26#039;s dns A CNAME and DNS records to point to your machine. Your ISP may not permit port 80 into your connection unless you subscribe to a business account. You will then need to open port 80 in your firewall. You may also need to run your own mail server.

Other Replys:You don%26#039;t.

What you do is call your ISP and pay for the static ip you need. Yep sounds like a rip-off and it is. Unfortunately you do not have a choice except to pay to have your site hosted by a third partry.

AAS Comp Networking

Other Replys:You would be better off paying for hosting

http://www.getawebpage.net

That site lists the best website hosting companies.

Other Replys:Why do things the hard way?

Use pages.google.com for free.

Or use 1%26amp;1. Lowest prices AND best packages.

$4/month for hosting - including the domain name.

$6/year for the domain name alone - which includes a 5 page

website, your own email address, etc.
